AOTON is an organization devoted to classical education and public engagement. The organization's goal is to is to bring classical Greek and Roman antiquity to the wider community.
AOTON's engagement takes a number of forms: classical Greek and Latin tutorials, programs for schools and colleges, and presentations of classical drama on the modern stage.
AOTON represents the pinnacle of educational, cultural and expressive pursuits.
AOTON arose from my own experiences with Greek and Roman cultures and their classical traditions. The experiences have been varied and rewarding, as well as singular and sobering.
These are reasons enough to wish to teach, to form, and to engage.
By seeing in myself and in history the results that classical learning can bring, I hope to help students rise above the commonality of education. Through traditional teaching and learning, I stimulate the parts of a student's minds that benefit from focused liberality, a sense of greatness, and critical investigation. Ab aliquo antiquo aliquid novum (something new from something old).
But that's only a part of it.
The philosophy behind AOTON also benefits from its syncretism. It embraces a world of physical and intellectual excellence. It supports viewpoints that are both ancient and modern. It suggests always to question, always to respect, never rest. I sometimes saw in my college years the intellectual, professor, or poet idle at his studies: he read and commented, and what he learned meant little more to him than another article or lecture topic. For me that wouldn't do, and so in my own development over the course of years within and without the university, with great teachers, and alone with works of literature I plotted an active classical education.
This is the Empedoclean concordia discors, the idea that there can be a harmony in different things. (The Latin is Horace's.) Latin and Greek were powerful elements in this outlook; in fact, they were the elements that made it possible.
An opportunity to share this with others is philosophy enough for AOTON.
Indeed, docendo disco. I learn by teaching.
And in the process, AOTON grows by doing: there is little beyond the organization's scope.
